HMS Illustrious Royal Navy Aircraft Carrier visits Dublin

The high readiness helicopter and commando carrier – the Royal Navy’s HMS Illustrious (RO6) made a rare visit to Ireland this weekend, when it docked in Dublin Port.

Having just completed a major multinational warfare exercise off the Scottish coast, the 22,000 tonnes former aircraft – carrier, the last of the ‘invincible’ class commissioned for the Royal Navy was in Dublin as part of the international naval flotilla.

A momentous occasion the HMS Illustrious was floodlit green to mark its arrival in Ireland during the year of the Irish Gathering, and all locals and tourists on Ireland Vacations who made their way to the area to enjoy the spectacle where able to view a number of other naval ships from around the world that arrived in to Dublin Port over the weekend.

More fondly known as “Lusty”, the HMS Illustrious was last in Ireland during 2005 when she docked along the south quays, however on this weekend trip she remained in the Dublin port from where she shall depart today.
