Good news for Ireland for next year, not only will 2013 see the Irish Gathering in full force, but one of the islands key cities has been cited in Lonely Planets top ten list of cities worth visiting in 2013. Four years after the Republic of Ireland’s Cork city came third in 2009; it is now the turn of Northern Ireland’s Derry to step into the Lonely Planet city guide list for 2013, with the Northern Ireland city placing behind San Francisco, Amsterdam and India’s Hyderabad in the fourth spot.
The other remaining cities in the list included Beijing in fifth place, New Zealand’s Christchurch in sixth, Hobart in Australia seventh, Montreal eighth, Addis Ababa in Ethiopia ninth and tenth place going to Puerto Iguazu near the famous waterfalls in Argentina.
This makes it double celebrations for the Northern Ireland city of Derry as this recent announcement comes not long after it was named as the UK City of Culture for 2013, a distinction which in no doubt led to Lonely Planets decision to add it to their popular list.
The year of cultural events ahead will include performances by the Royal Ballet and Primal Scream, a play by Sam Shephard produced by Field Day and the hosting of the Turner Prize, which is the first time it has been held outside of England.
With so much more to been seen and happening in Derry throughout 2013, including major shows and events – it promises to be a showcase and a re-invention of the historic walled city as a culturally rich and vibrant place to visit whilst on vacation in Ireland.
This is fantastic news 😀 Definitely worth of a Tweet and share on Facebook!
Derry is going to be busy this year!
