It has been a tough opening match for the Irish team in their long awaited opening game in the Euros against Croatia. Ireland’s first match in the Euros since 1988, proved disastrous with Ireland suffering their first ever opening match loss in major tournaments and also putting an end to their 14 match unbeaten run. Despite a consolation goal from Sean St Ledger, the Irish team lost 3-1 to impressive Croatia who dominated a match that was at times very messy with some controversial rulings.
With this loss, Ireland have it all to do in their next match needing a win against current World Cup and defending Euro champions Spain to stay in with a chance of leaving the group. But playing best with their back is against the wall often brings out the best in the Irish squad and whilst chances are slim all hope is not lost yet for a move to the second stage.
We aren’t known as the fighting Irish for no reason and whatever the outcome in the Euros we at least hope we can be able to say we put up a good fight to the very end.
