The highly anticipated London 2012 Olympics begins tomorrow and all eyes will be on London as nations from around the world come together to compete against one another in a number of sporting events and disciplines.
The Ireland team arrived to the Olympic Park this week and was officially welcomed into the Olympic family in a ceremony in which saw Sonia O’Sullivan, Ireland’s chef de mission, and Pat Hickey, the Olympic Council of Ireland president, led a group of Irish athletes and competitors across the parade ground whilst the National Youth Theatre sang. The Irish flag was then raised on the Olympic Flag Pole, the Irish national anthem was played by a five-ringed sound system and presents were exchanged.
The official opening ceremony will take place at the Olympic Stadium in London on Friday night and will see Four-times women’s world boxing champion Katie Taylor of Bray in County Wicklow carry Ireland’s flag in front of Team Ireland, as they are watched on by a worldwide audience of over 300 million people.
Good Luck Team Ireland.
