2013 City of Culture Celebrations begin in Derry

Derry kicked off its years as the city of culture and style at the weekend with an impressive concert that was co-hosted by actors Amanda Burton and Jimmy Nesbitt and featured some of the North most renowned musicians such as; Phil Coulter – who kicked things off, Dana, Gerard McChrystal, Neil Hannon, Girls Aloud star Nadine Coyle and The Undertones, as well as Paul Brady and 2 members from Snow Patrol.

A city that must be visited during your Ireland Vacation, it was recently named by Lonely Planet Travel Guide as one of the top 10 must-see cities of 2013, Derry is jubilant right now and has been praised for his forthcoming high calibre programme and highlights for the year that include a new production from American Playwright Sam Shepard and the return of the Field DAt theatre company with three new dramas, the return of the Colmcille river event, the hosting of the Turner Prize and the All-Ireland Fleadh.

More than 11,000 people applied for the 2,000 free tickets for last night’s concert, which was broadcast live on BBC Radio Foyle and BBC Radio Ulster and will be available for those who missed the action on BBC NI this Saturday 26th January at 10.30pm.
