The town of Wexford, on Ireland’s south-east coast, plays host to a unique celebration of the operatic arts with an 11 day programme jam packed with morning events, lunchtime recitals, afternoon ShortWorks and concerts and late night revues.
The festival has been in existence for more than sixty years with many thousands of people making trips to Ireland to visit Wexford Festival Opera seeking buried operatic treasure. Since its inception in 1951 this seaside town has hosted what has become known as one of the world’s most remarkable and unique opera festivals.
Wexford Festival Opera which takes place between the 22nd October and 2nd November has created a unique status as the pioneer of championing the unjustly neglected operas, introducing new rising stars and audiences to the forgotten masterpieces. A variety of high quality productions which annually delight both critics and audiences alike offer the perfect platform from which to promote these often neglected arts.
As one of most distinctive events in Ireland, there is also a vibrant Fringe Festival offers everything from art exhibitions through to singing and swinging pubs. Throughout all this, there is the remarkable camaraderie engendered by the warmth and intimacy of Wexford town itself.
