Cliff Walks of Ireland: Kilkee

I recently had the opportunity to visit the Kilkee Cliff Walk for the first time and it is safe to say that it exceeded all expectations!

Location

Located in West Clare along Ireland’s breathtaking Wild Atlantic Way, this scenic coastal walk begins near the car park at Diamond Rocks Café and offers some very dramatic views of the Irish coastline.

The well-maintained tarmac path makes the route accessible for visitors of all abilities and one of its great advantages is that you can choose how far you wish to walk. On the day of our visit the weather was perfect creating ideal conditions for a leisurely stroll along the Atlantic coast.

The Walk

As the path gradually climbs, walkers are rewarded with stunning views of rugged rock formations, breaking waves and nesting seabirds. One particularly memorable section crosses a dramatic chasm overlooking the sea far below. While the scenery is breathtaking, visitors should exercise caution, as there are few protective barriers along the cliff edge. Admire from a safe distance!

The Views

Reaching the Loop Head viewpoint at the top of the ascent is well worth the effort. The panoramic views stretch for miles, revealing isolated outcrops that have long been separated from the mainland. On one of these rocky islands, the remains of past human habitation can still be seen offering a fascinating glimpse into a bygone way of life.

How Long it Takes

Visitors can either return along the same route, enjoying the coastal scenery from a different perspective, or continue on a quiet country road that loops back towards Kilkee. The loop is only 5km (just over 3 miles) but with additional paths, you can take half an hour up to 2 and a half hours. This remarkable walk is a true hidden gem and well worth a visit when exploring County Clare
