Taking place between 16th – 18th March, the Limerick St Patrick’s Day Festival will include the mammoth St Patrick’s Day Parade on Sunday 17th March followed by the 43rd International Band Championship on Monday 18th March that will feature Marching Bands from all over the world.
Looking set to be bigger and better than years go by, this year’s festival promises to the biggest yet and not only does Limerick’s St Patrick Day Parade look set to be once again the largest regional parade in Ireland but organisers are hoping that they can also turn the city green during the year of the Irish Gathering.
The theme of this year’s festival was announced recently as “saints and scholars” and one of the highlights of this year’s festivities will be the Parade of Patrick’s, a world record attempt to gather the most people dressed as St Patrick’s in one place! These colourful characters will join the many sporting, cultural, community, business and social organizations who will be taking part in the parade that begins at 12pm on Sunday 17th March in the centre of Limerick.
With hardly chance to recover from the festivities of Sunday’s Parade the city will then host the 43rd annual International Band Championship on Monday 18th March from 12pm, making it Ireland’s longest running international band parade and competition.
Including bands from all over America, Europe and Ireland, all of whom will fill the air and entertain spectators, locals and visitors on Ireland vacation with a choice of powerful music – the International Band Championship will start in O’Connell Avenue and end in Merchant’s Quay (outside City Hall) with a free concert for the public.
