National Ploughing Championships

Known nationwide as Ireland’s farming festival celebrating Irelands rich agricultural heritage, the National Ploughing Championships originated in 1931 as a ploughing match to settle an argument between two farming friends on which county had the best ploughmen. Today it has grown from such humble beginnings to become one of Europes largest (if not the largest) outdoor exhibition and agricultural trade show, annually attracting up to 1,100 exhibitors and over 190,000 visitors. Galway International Oyster & Seafood Festival

For lovers of good food September is a richly laden month of culinary delights. After the extravaganza of Waterford Harvest Festival in mid-September, two weeks later is the turn of Galway with its annual world renowned Galway International Oyster & Seafood Festival. Held on the 28-30th September, the festival celebrates Galways rich annual oyster harvest with 3 days and nights dedicated to fine food, good drink and all round festivities for visitors of all ages and interests. Rose of Tralee International Festival

Only a month away, The Rose of Tralee Festival,  one of Ireland’s largest and longest running festivals, which is based around the selection of the Rose of Tralee, an international event that encompasses young women of Irish descent from Ireland and around the world will take place from the 17th – 21st August 2012.

Spraoi Festival – Waterford and Ireland’s International Street Arts Festival Arts Council

Attracting nearly 100,000 people, the Spraoi festival takes place yet again this August in the magnificent city of Waterford. West Cork man Steve Redmond is first to complete Oceans 7 Challenge

With the Olympics just a few days away, Irish sporting pride is already on a high with news that an Irish amateur swimmer has made history by completing the gruelling Seven Oceans challenge. Steve Redmond from Ballydehob in the scenic Mizen Head region of beautiful West Cork, completed this mammoth task of endurance swimming. One of the world’s toughest tests, it is endurance swimming’s equivalent to climbing the seven highest mountain peaks and involves swimming across the world’s most demanding and dangerous sea channels.

Top Research Boat Docks in Ireland

A plankton boat said to be at the center of the first ever global study of marine plankton attempt, has docked at Dún Laoghaire harbour. Travelling across fifty countries in the past two and a half years, the boat has also clocked up as much as 115,000km on it’s mission to figure out the effect on climate change and other geographical features and it’s effect on planktonic ecosystems. Studying plankton is akin to recording the pulse of the planet according to scientists working on the project. Continue reading
